I tend toward the conclusion that in his thought Schmitt was a sophist and pedant. In his personal life he seems to have shown the same sort of moral flexibility re his engagement with National Socialism and post-war liberalism.
One could say that Schmitt was a bad guy and should be ignored, but I think that Schmitt's attractiveness to the intellectual class is reason enough to find his legacy interesting, but also sad.
